Termin: Music in the Diaspora – China and Taiwan\nVortragende: Su Zheng\nAssociate Professor of Music and East Asian Studies\, Wesleyan University\, is one of the leading scholars in the field of China/Chinese American music studies. A former member of the China Broadcasting Bureau Traditional Instruments Orchestra (Beijing) and the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York\, she is the author of Claiming Diaspora: Music\, Transnationalism\, and Cultural Politics in Chinese/Asian America (Oxford University Press\, 2010) and has published extensively in both English and Chinese languages. She is currently writing a book on contemporary African migrant musicians in China\, supported by a Fulbright U.S. Senior Research Scholar Award.\nShen Yun Controversy and Beyond: History\, Spirituality\, and Transnational Politics in Global Cultural Spectacle\nSince its debut on Broadway in 2006\, New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts\, affiliated with the controversial Falun Gong belief system\, has expanded to three companies touring over 100 cities worldwide annually with more than 300 performances. Millions of people in North and South America\, Asia\, Australia\, and Europe have attended Shen Yun’s frequently sold-out shows. Typically\, these shows are enthusiastically endorsed by politicians\, celebrities\, and human rights groups\, but condemned by Chinese government and strictly censored in China. Shen Yun claims that their mission is to “revive 5\,000 years of civilization through the universal language of music and dance”; yet many audience members feel “duped” or “a huge let down” by what they experienced at the show. In this lecture\, Su Zheng critically examines Shen Yun’s contentious performance\, highlighting the central role of the body in Shen Yun’s music narratives. The talk considers Shen Yun’s “historical authenticity” constructed through choreographed and costumed bodies; its spiritual core embedded in movements and vocality; and its denunciation and protest against the Chinese Communist Party visualized through representation of violence and injured bodies. Reflecting on the attempt to position Shen Yun within the American domestic discourse of multiculturalism\, the talk suggests that the case of Shen Yun\, as uncomfortable and complex as it is\, provides a testing ground to tease out the limits of some basic operative concepts in recent ethnomusicology that we engage with in our analysis of music\, such as culture and religion\, globalization and nationalism\, authenticity and exoticism\, multiculturalism and ethnic identity\, as well as diaspora and progressive social movement. \nKünstlerischer Beitrag: Ming Wang mit Karlheinz Essl\nMing Wang wurde in Taipei\, Taiwan geboren\, studierte zunächst Malerei und dann chinesische Zupfinstrumente Guzheng und Pipa in Taiwan. Sie studierte Komposition und Computermusik an der Musikuniversität Wien u.a. bei Prof. Dieter Kaufmann\, erhielt u.a. Staatstipendien vom Bundeskanzleramt\, den Förderungspreis der Stadt Wien und den Publicity Preis von SKE. Sie arbeitet seit Jahren u.a mit dem Radiosymphonieorchester Wien\, dem ensemble xx. jahrhundert\, dem KOEHNEquartet\, dem Ensemble die Reihe\, dem Ensemble Reconsil und dem Ensemble Kontrapunkte zusammen. Ihre Werke gelangten bei internationalen Festivals u.a. „Wien modern“\, „Steirischer Herbst“ und „Beijing Modern Music Festival” zur Aufführung.\nMing Wang übt seit Jahren die Tätigkeit als Komponistin\, Musikpädagogin und Musikerin aus.\nKarlheinz Essl ist Kompositionsprofessor an der mdw mit den Schwerpunkten elektroakustische und experimentelle Musik\, Computermusik\, algorithmische Komposition\, Multimedia und Improvisation.\nVon der „Fünftonmusik“ bis zur westlichen Avantgarde\nGuzheng ist das populärste chinesische Volkszupfinstrument\, innerhalb einer Oktav sind nur 5 Töne. Sie ist für pentatonische Musik geeignet\, klingt immer harmonisch\, aber etwas kitschig. Mit 15 habe ich mit Guzheng angefangen. Diese Musik spiegelt nicht nur mein früheres musikalisches Interesse wider\, sondern auch meine chinesische kulturelle Identität.\nSpäter habe ich in Europa durch die Inspiration der zeitgenössischen Musik und verschiedener MusikerInnen die unendlichen Möglichkeiten dieser 5 Töne entdeckt und betrachte das Instrument von einem ganz anderen Blickwinkel. Bei der Ringvorlesung Transkulturalität_mdw werde ich meinen Umgang mit diesem Instrument von verschiedenen Seiten präsentieren. \nKommentar und Moderation: Hande Sağlam (mdw) \n
