Präsidenten der USA\, der Rassismus und Frauenverachtung nicht nur nicht verbirgt\, sondern zu seinem Markenzeichen gemacht hat\, überraschte. Die Welt staunt\, was alles möglich ist. Der Verwunderung folgte Beunruhigung nach der Präsentation einer US-Regierung\, die sich wie das Who-is-who der Leugner_innen des Klimawandels\, des reaktionären Obskurantismus und Militarismus liest. Erste Maßnahmen der neuen Administration sorgten selbst in den Institutionen für Entsetzen. \nVieles\, was uns heute aus Washington erreicht\, ist grotesk\, doch handelt es sich nicht um einen schlechten Witz. Trump und seine europäischen Epigon_innen\, Strache\, Hofer\, Orbàn\, Le Pen\, Wilders machen\, was sie ankündigten. Sie führen einen Kreuzzug gegen „politische Korrektheit“ und das „liberale Establishment“\, im Grunde jedoch gegen Demokratie\, Frauenrechte\, Rechtsstaat und Meinungsfreiheit. \nDagegen hat sich in den USA und weltweit eine Protestbewegung gebildet\, in der Feminist_innen\, Sozialist_innen\, Menschrechtler_innen\, Gegner_innen des Rassismus und Gewerkschafter_innen sich gemeinsam mit Liberalen gegen die reale Gefahr wenden\, die der Freiheit und der Demokratie drohen. \nDer Wahlsieg Trumps und der Aufstieg nationalistischer\, rechtsradikaler Bewegungen in ganz Europa und weltweit stellen auch eine neue intellektuelle Herausforderung dar\, scheinen sie doch das Zeitalter\, in dem Kapitalismus und Demokratie miteinander zu koexistieren vorgegeben haben\, zu beenden. Wie können Freiheit und Demokratie im Zeitalter eines historischen weltweiten Umbruchs sozialer und politischer Verhältnisse verteidigt und ausgebaut werden? \nDiese Fragen wollen wir diskutieren mit:\nNancy Fraser und Eli Zaretzky\, zwei der namhaftesten US-amerikanischen Intellektuellen\, die sich auf Kurzaufenthalt in Wien befinden\, sowie mit Marlene Streeruwitz\, Autorin\, Regisseurin und feministische Theoretikerin und Walter Baier\, politischer Koordinator des europäischen Netzwerkes transform! europe. The world stands amazed to see what is actually possible. After the presentation of a US Government that read like a Who’s Who of climate change deniers\, reactionary obscurantists and militarists\, astonishment was superseded by anxiety. The first steps taken by the new Administration sent shockwaves around the world and was met with consternation even in the Institutions. \nMuch of what reaches us today from Washington is grotesque\, but it is not a matter of a bad joke. Trump and his European imitators\, Strache\, Hofer\, Orbán\, Le Pen and Wilders\, are doing what they said they would. They are cursading against “political correctness” and the “liberal Establishment”\, but really they have begun a war against democracy\, women’s rights\, rule of law and freedom of opinion. \nConversely\, an unprecedented protest movement has formed in the USA and around the world\, in which feminists\, socialists\, human rights activists\, anti-racism campaigners and unionists are uniting with liberals against the real dangers that threaten freedom and democracy. \nTrump’s election victory and the rise of nationalist\, radical right-wing groups throughout Europe and the world also represent a new intellectual challenge and seem to herald the end of an age in which capitalism and democracy have seemingly coexisted with each other. In an age of historic\, global upheaval of social and political relationships how can freedom and democracy be protected and strengthened? \nWe want to discuss these issues with:\nNancy Fraser and Eli Zaretzky\, two of US America’s most notable intellectuals\, who are in Vienna for a short stay. Also joining us in the discussions will be Marlene Streeruwitz\, author\, director and feminist theorist; and Walter Baier\, political coordinator of the European network transform! europe.
