A betrayal of human rights?

All members of the Council of Europe and the EU committed themselves to the European Convention on Human Rights. But in Europe people continue to be discriminated against, threatened and even killed for racist, homophobic or religious reasons. Thousands of asylum seekers have already lost their lives trying to escape to Europe, and those who arrive are often met with a lack of infrastructure and acceptable accommodation. What role do fundamental questions of human rights play in political decisions? How can we trust that our political representatives will not disregard them?
